Cocach Tom

Every night The Big Guy breaks down the action in the American League.

Biggest Win

White Sox 4-Blue Jays 3: Facing a potential sweep at the hands of Toronto, Chicago responded. Down 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th, right fielder Alex Rios tied the game 3-3. Three innings of shutout bullpen pitching later, and third baseman Orlando Hudson hit a walk-off single to center to drive in Dayan Viciedo with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th. At 32-25, the Sox remain 1.5 games up in the AL Central.

Best Hitter

Batting sixth and playing both right field and first base, Red Sox Adrian Gonzalez went 3-4, 2 RBI against Baltimore. A year after posting a .338 BA, 27 HR, 117 RBI, Gonzalez is off to a slow start— .272, 4 HR, 29 RBI. Red Sox Nation could use a bunch more days like this out of their 2011 free agent jewel.

Best Pitcher

Ace pitchers need to be their team’s stopper. When nothing else is going well, the #1 Guy needs to put the team on his back. Clay Buchholz did just that tonight. After a terrible start to his season, Buchholz now stands at 6-2 and has gone at least 7 IP in each of his last three starts. The complete game shutout 4-hitter kept the Sox from getting swept by the Orioles. He did commit his first error of the season, but the Sox still won 7-0.

Stat to know

Rays starter David Price became the first AL pitcher to 8 wins. His 5 IP and 8 Ks paved the way for a 7-3 Tampa Bay victory over the New York Yankees.

Tomorrow’s Note

Interleague play kicks off tomorrow. The biggest treat? Stephen Strasburg taking his 6-1 record to the bump in Fenway Park.
