Bryce Harper

Yes, this is the photo of the youngest player in MLB. Lets meet the 19-year-old right fielder, Bryce Harper, from Las Vegas, Nevada. Harper was drafted 1st overall in the 1st round in the 2010 MLB draft by the Washington Nationals. Harper made his way through the minors in just his second year.

Bryce Harper started his career for the Hagerstown Suns, the A team for the Washington Nationals. For the Suns, Harper played 72 games, where he hit .318, 82 hits, 17 doubles, 14 homers, 58 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases. Later in 2011 Harper would be called up to AA to play for the Harrisburg Senators, where Harper hit .256 with 33 hits, 7 doubles, 3 homers, 12 RBIs, and 7 steals in just 37 games played. Harper then started the 2012 season in AAA, playing for the Syracuse Chiefs. Harper played in just 21 games batting .243 with 18 hits, 4 doubles, 1 homer, and 3 RBIs before being called up to the Washington Nationals on April 28th.

Now into his rookie year at just 19, Harper has started 67 games for the Washington Nationals this season. Harper has started at all three postions in the outfield although right field has been his primary postion starting 21 games at the position. Harper is batting .275 with 74 hits, 15 doubles, 8 homers, 5 triples, 26 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases on the season. Harper is a very well rounded batter, hitting .272 against left handed pitching and .277 against right handers. The Washington Nationals are currently 3.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves for first in the division, and Harper and the other young players have a lot to do with the teams new found success.

Look for Harper tonight on ESPN as the Washington Nationals are taking on the New York Mets. Harper is batting .238 against the Mets this season.

Every night The Big Guy breaks down the action in the American League.

Biggest Win

Playing on the road against baseball’s best team, the Chicago White Sox eked out a 5-4 victory against the L.A. Dodgers. Now 35-30, the Sox had been on a bit of a recent skid. The Chicago bullpen worked 4 no-hit innings Saturday and rookie closer Addison Reed picked up his 8th save of the season. The Sox lead the AL Central by 1.5 games.

Best Pitcher

The Big Guy’s dark horse pick won again last night, this time on the arm of starter Jason Hammel. The 7-2 righty threw a complete game 1-hit shutout to fuel the Orioles past the Braves. Hammel walked 2 and struck out 8. Hammel lowered his ERA to 2.87 and Baltimore improved to 38-27 on the year.

Best Hitter

Mike Moustakas went 3-5, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R Saturday. The 23-year-old Kansas City third baseman accounted for 6 of his teams 7 runs Saturday as they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7.

Stat to know

Since his belated season debut on May 28, Hard Hittin’ Carlos Quentin has posted a .417/.541/.896 line. The 29-year-old left fielder could be used as a major trading chip for the 23-43 San Diego Padres.

Tomorrow’s Note

The Yankees start 8-2 Ivan Nova (4.64 ERA) against 3-3 National’s starter Edwin Jackson (3.02 ERA).
