Omer Asik

Coming into his 3rd season, the 26 year old Turkish center for the Chicago Bulls has been offered a 3 year 25.1 million dollar deal by the Houston Rockets. Now the decision for the Chicago Bulls to make is to match the Rockets offer which would pay Asik $15 million dollars in his last season of his contract. I believe the Bulls should let him go to the Rockets for 3 simple reasons.

  1. As much as Asik has become a fan favorite around Chicago, and I personally love the upside Asik has to offer to the Bulls, but as of right now the Bulls should not give that much money to a player who averages just 3 points a game in his career. That kind of money needs a lot more production in the scoring and rebounding department. The Bulls could take the money that is needed to resign Asik, and get a quality player for that same money.
  2.  Derrick Rose contract is up in 2014-15 season. If the Bulls were to pay Asik this contract they would be paying  Asik $15 million dollars that season, and if the Bulls plan on paying Rose big time money, then they could use that $15 million dollars towards his contract extension. Rose has proven that he is the face of this franchise and there’s no way the Bulls should ever put themselves in position to lose Rose.
  3. High risk, little reward. To match this offer would put Bulls fans in a tail spin of questions. Even if Asik improves over the next 3 seasons, where does that put the Chicago Bulls. Noah is already a high quality player at the center position, and the Bulls plan on paying him to stay in Chicago. The Bulls would like to give Taj Gibson a contract extension, which would be impossible if Asik is resigned. Boozer already has $16.1 million dollars coming to him the same season Asik’s  contract would pay him $15 million, along with Rose’s contract being up and paying him $17.8 million. This would put the Bulls in a very tough position to ever improve over the next 3 season, while putting all their money into a player who has never proven himself capable of playing at a level to awarded with that kind of money.
